ROVER OXFORD YOUTH HOCKEY FESTIVAL REPORT

The Rover Oxford Youth Festival was again a great success with over 800 children representing seventy teams from all over the UK in one of the countries largest youth competitions sponsored by the Royal Mail Sports Foundation. Teams from Banbridge in Northern Ireland won three of the competitions with local teams Oxford Hawks and West Witney also enjoying success

 

On Saturday, the morning session saw Teddington overcome Eastcote to win the Under 8's competition whilst Youth Sport South from Northern Ireland pipped City of Oxford in the Under 10's. In the afternoon Oxford Hawks won the Under 12 trophy after narrowly beating Cheltenham in the final on penalties.

 

On Sunday morning, the Under 14 competition was won on penalties by Banbridge Academy against an equally strong Eastcote team. In the afternoon, West Witney Under 16 girls picked up the winners trophy after overcoming Teddington 2-1 in the final whilst Banbridge Academy lifted their second trophy of the day narrowly squeezing past Whitchurch from Cardiff on penalties in the Under 16 boys age group.

 

The Oxfordshire Umpires Association awarded fair play trophies on Sunday to Mini Panthers Under 14's who had travelled from the Wirral to take part whilst Teddington Under 16 girls and Aylesbury Under 16 boys were awarded the trophies in the afternoon for their good sporting behaviour.

 

Gareth Evans from the Royal Mail who presented the trophies on Sunday said "It is wonderful to see so many talented children taking part in such a well run Festival and lets hope that a few of them will make it to London in 2012".

Under 8:  Teddington 1, Eastcote 0

Under 10: Youth Sport South 4, City of Oxford 0

Under 12: Oxford Hawks 1, Cheltenham 1 (Hawks win 3-2 on penalties)

Under 14 Boys: Banbridge Academy 1, Eastcote 0

Under 16 Girls: West Witney 2, Teddington 1

Under 16 Boys: Banbridge Academy 0, Whitchurch 0 (Banbridge win 5-4 on penalties)
